Ebook About
Remember When All You Wanted Was Your MTV? The perfect gift for the music fan or child of the eighties in your life.Named One of the Best Books of 2011 by NPR – Spin - USA Today – CNBC - Pitchfork - The Onion - The Atlantic - The Huffington Post – VEVO - The Boston Globe - The San Francisco Chronicle Remember the first time you saw Michael Jackson dance with zombies in "Thriller"? Diamond Dave karate kick with Van Halen in "Jump"? Tawny Kitaen turning cartwheels on a Jaguar to Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again"? The Beastie Boys spray beer in "(You Gotta) Fight for Your Right (To Party)"? Axl Rose step off the bus in "Welcome to the Jungle"? It was a pretty radical idea-a channel for teenagers, showing nothing but music videos. It was such a radical idea that almost no one thought it would actually succeed, much less become a force in the worlds of music, television, film, fashion, sports, and even politics. But it did work. MTV became more than anyone had ever imagined. I Want My MTV tells the story of the first decade of MTV, the golden era when MTV's programming was all videos, all the time, and kids watched religiously to see their favorite bands, learn about new music, and have something to talk about at parties. From its start in 1981 with a small cache of videos by mostly unknown British new wave acts to the launch of the reality-television craze with The Real World in 1992, MTV grew into a tastemaker, a career maker, and a mammoth business. Featuring interviews with nearly four hundred artists, directors, VJs, and television and music executives, I Want My MTV is a testament to the channel that changed popular culture forever.

Book I Want My MTV: The Uncensored Story of the Music Video Revolution Review :

This book was a fabulous trip down memory lane. I'm old enough to remember when MTV played music videos and this brought back memories of watching my favorites from the second British invasion, particularly Duran Duran and George Michael. The first half was the best part for me, the creation and struggle to get MTV on the air. Videos as a new medium and the early days of cable. I particularly enjoyed the many behind the scenes tales from artists, music label staff, MTV staff and the video directors. A lot of laughs and many bittersweet moments are covered. Luke Daniels does a fantastic job on the audiobook narration. The various eras and scandals are included as well. Nearly eryone gets mentioned here. From pop to hair bands, headbangers, hip hop, rap, metal and more. The sections on Michael Jackson are especially interesting, showing how much of a diva he was. I loved the early VJs, unfortunately they were pushed out for the second round who were much different. Surprisingly, the boy band era isn't mentioned much. New Kids on the Block are mentioned, but not Total Request Live and the two mega acts of N'Sync and the Backstreet Boys. I would've loved a section on them. Even the Real World is covered. A must read it you are a fan of wonder why do many people loved eighties music.
A good retrospective/oral history of the music company that changed the music business forvever. The stories of the early days along with my reading of the VJ book before it, gave an inside look at how music made it's trsition from aural to visual - possibly losing some of its soul in the process but gaining as an art form in other aspects. Growing up as a kid in the era, I was never really aware of the racism that possibly existed in it's playlist. But as with anything - talent and money will change minds as it did for a decade or so allowing artists to sometimes thrive when they should not have and talented groups to fall by the wayside. A good read if your are interested in stories from the people who were there and from those who rode the wave until is crashed into the shore of reality TV.
